Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and ProSiebenSat.1 Games Group announced an agreement on the server accessibility for European and U.S. players of 8 online games, including the upcoming MMOFPS PlanetSide 2.

In January 2012 Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) announced a new multi-year partnership with ProSiebenSat.1 Games Group to license eight of its online games in Europe, including DC Universe™ Online, EverQuest® II, Star Wars®: Clone Wars Adventures™, Free Realms®, Magic: The Gathering – Tactics®, Pox Nora®, the upcoming PlanetSide® 2, and the next installment of the EverQuest® franchise.

SOE and ProSiebenSat.1 updated a pretty detailed FAQ on this major license deal recently (here the SOE forum announcement and here the German ProSiebenSat1. post) and addressed the issue regarding the server accessibility. Both have come to an agreement "that it is in the best interest of the players and the Community to allow players to continue to play on any server regardless of where they live. That means that European players will be able to play on U.S. servers and vice versa." There will be servers physically located in the U.S. and Europe, but both operated by SOE.

That's an interesting move, but will this make sense for PlanetSide 2 also? A U.S. player might want to join a battle on a European server and vice versa, but the an essential factor is the ping time, which inevitably increases, if he plays on a server located on another continent.

ProSiebenSat.1 Games Group secured the rights to offer the games in more than 40 European territories including Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Other countries may be added later.
They operate 8 MMO's in Europe on at this stage and are just about to become a major MMO publisher in Europe, should the 8 SOE games be installed too. ProSiebenSat.1 will be the official publisher for PlanetSide 2, a true MMOFPS (massively multiplayer online first person shooter) with maybe thousands of players in one map.
